The book covers the most widely used methods of social research, both quantitative and qualitative, emphasizing the connections between these forms and their theoretical bases. It outlines the main ways in which sociologists gather data, describing the range of ways of analyzing it, for example survey methods, ethnography, documentary research, secondary analysis of survey data and discourse and conversation analysis. It also highlights the links between data, critical understanding and theory. Stimulating examples of social research using a variety of methods are provided as are ideas for student projects to reinforce the material in the book and to encourage interest in social research. Finally, the book refers the student to more advanced books which discuss specific methods in more detail.
Collaboratively developed and written by members of the Sociology Department at the University of Surrey - one of the leading centres specializing in research methods - this book will be an ideal text for first methods courses in sociology, social policy, social work, nursing and health studies, social psychology, organization studies, criminology and education.
